The Maryland Public Service Commission tracks the status of electric and natural gas choice customer switching and enrollment statistics on a monthly basis. They may not always publish the monthly reports monthly, but in this post, we’re going to show you step by step how to find these reports.
Why are these reports important?
In Maryland’s competitive energy market, the electric and gas choice enrollment reports show us how many residential, commercial, and industrial customers have switched from their host utility to a competitive retail energy supplier.
These statistics often indicate the overall “health” of the competitive energy market by measuring how many customers are switching away from their host utility from month to month.
If these numbers rise month over month, that typically means that alternative energy suppliers are offering competitive energy rates that beat your host utilities’ current rates.
If these numbers fall or stay flat from month to month, that gives us a good indication that alternative energy suppliers cannot offer an incentive for customers to switch.
To locate these key market reports, here’s how to do it:
1.) Go to the Maryland Public Service Commission home page → http://webapp.psc.state.md.us/Intranet/home.cfm
2.) On the left-side menu, click on “Electric” if you wish to navigate to the electric enrollment reports. Or, click on “Gas” if you wish to navigate to the gas enrollment reports.
3.) From there, the menu should expand and you will see a sub-menu option called “Electric Choice Enrollment Monthly Report” or “Gas Choice Enrollment Report.”
From there, you should be able to easily click-through and navigate to all of the historical and current enrollment reports published by the Maryland Public Service Commission.
